USA Today: 10 delicious stops on the first donut trail in the country

June 05, 2019

In 1960, Holtman’s began as a mom-and-pop donut shop in Newton, Ohio, but it’s since grown to four locations, with number five on the way in fall 2019. The West Chester shop (opened in 2017) is Toni Holtman-Plazarin and family’s third location (the trendy Over-the-Rhine location opened in 2013 and still has lines out the door) andis the only shop included on the trail.

Their donuts might be priced higher than some other shops ($12 for a mixed dozen and $2 specialty), but that’s because they tend to make too-pretty-to-eat donuts, such as Fruity Pebbles confections, Game of Thrones-themed ones, a margarita-glazed one, chocolate cream cheese iced donuts and their famous maple bacon donut.

For those who are late risers, you're in luck – unless they sell out, Holtman's stays open until 8 p.m.

Holtman’s Donuts, a small family-owned chain, opened a shop in Over-the-Rhine in 2013, after getting a loan through 3CDC and its property development partners, the Model Group, the store’s landlord.

“A lot of people thought we were crazy,” said Katie Plazarin, who co-owns the shop with her husband, Danny Plazarin.

But the bet paid off. The store did so well that the Plazarins are now planning on opening a fourth location in West Chester, Ohio, about 22 miles north of Cincinnati. The couple credit the Over-the-Rhine store for cementing their brand and giving them greater visibility.

Hop across Vine to Graeter’s for some raspberry chip after that — or try the raspberry sorbet if you’re starting to feel a tad guilty. Then head west on 14th a few more steps to Brezel pretzel shop for numerous flavors in a twist — cinnamon sugar, dark chocolate chunk and salt, orange thyme, spinach asiago, chipotle cheddar, Italian Parmesan and many more. Holtman’s Donuts (Cincinnati, OH): I’m traveling across the country on my Edible Inevitable tour, so I might as well check out the best doughnuts the country has to offer. Although I hold that Gibson’s has the best doughnuts, Hotman’s has (hands down) the best traditional dunkin’ stick. Crusty on the outside with a thickish solid glaze and an almost buttery interior. If I lived anywhere near this shop I’d be the size of a cruise ship.

Delve into art and design throughout the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood—once home to 19th-century German immigrants, followed by decades as a crime-riddled hinterland, and now undergoing a renaissance. Start the morning people-watching on Vine Street at Holtman’s Donut Shop, a family-owned bakery since 1960 where German-chocolate-fudge-cake doughnuts ($1) come hot out of the fryer.

Admit it, you want to get all Homer Simpson and stuff those fresh bacon maple donuts into your face hole right now. You can't help it. It's an instinctive reaction—our human psyche is has evolved to recognize the face-melting, belt-bursting alchemy that quality donuts provide. It's why they make XXX large T-shirts, and why, sometimes, it's okay to feel like you need one.

In September 2013, the Loveland-based Holtman’s Donuts finally opened an OTR location, replete with a window where you can peer through and watch them make donuts, like the sensational maple bacon. Every time you come within a block radius of this shop, you will begin to salivate — even if at first you don’t know why. Homer Simpson would be so proud ... and hungry.

When a well-respected national magazine like Travel + Leisure praises your donut shop as a “cult favorite” that’s an integral part of Cincinnati’s hippest new district, the Over-the-Rhine (OTR), it’s clear to see that your marketing and branding efforts are on the right track.

Let the French have their croissants. The real morning-pastry action is in doughnuts, and even if Americans can't claim sole ownership over something as simple as frying dough, the United States can certainly stake a claim on doughnut shops, those beautiful, Technicolor gut-bomb oases that dot this great land of ours.

After more than 50 years of breakfast perfection on the city’s eastern outskirts (Loveland and Williamsburg), Holtman’s Donuts has landed a seat at the cool kids table with their Over-the-Rhine shop. Family-owned and operated by three generations since 1960, Holtman’s makes its donuts from scratch and bakes them fresh twice a day—perfect for grabbing a dozen in the morning on the way to work, and another dozen on the drive home.

Talk about classics. The yeast dough is hand-made and heavenly. If you prefer cake doughnuts, get the powdered sugar variety. Or the crullers. No, first get a mixed dozen. Other people have known how good Holtman's doughnuts are for a long time; it took them opening a store in the Gateway Quarter for me to catch on.

The Holtman family started serving handmade, fresh donuts in the sixties. Since then, people from all across the Tri-State have swarmed to their Loveland store for a sweet treat.

There's a bit of anxiety that comes with biting into a custard-filled doughnut. It often explodes in a mess of filling that drips on your chin and fingers and, taste-wise, too-much filling and too-much sugar can pound the palate, leaving you with a dissatisfied "meh". Such is not the case at Holtman's Donuts outside of Cincinnati in Loveland, Ohio.

Certain pastries may come and go in popularity (we’re looking at you, cupcake), but the donut will outlast every food trend in the history of the world. No one understands this more than the Loveland, Ohio-based Holtman’s Donuts.
